Look after your body Suddenly the Mont 24 is just around the corner! Hopefully you and your team mates have been training hard, ready to give it your best shot on the 27th and 28th of this month.
Whether you're in it to win it, or just for a bit of fun, it's important you approach the event with a game plan. This could include what you'll need to eat and drink, rider order, how you'll set up your camp site, the list goes on. Nothing is guaranteed in a race like the Mont 24, except that your body is going to get real tired, and probably a bit sore too.
That's why those terrific chaps that organise the Mont 24 have arranged to have a team of remedial massage therapists on hand (pardon the pun) to help you through the madness. For a minimal charge, you and your team will be able to have a 15 minute massage to treat anything from cramping calves to a sore neck.
Competing in an endurance event can cause tightness and misalignment of joints and muscles which can cause pain, strains and may lead to more significant injury if left untreated. The good news is, you can keep a lid on all this by stretching regularly, and having a massage when the going gets tough. The massage therapists at the Mont 24 will not only give you a great 15 minute treatment, but they will give you advice on stretches you should be doing, and strategies to prevent further discomfort and/or injury.
Here are some common problems we helped riders overcome last year at the Mont:
Cramping calves Sore neck Sore lower back Tight/cramping hamstrings Burning quads Pain in between shoulder blades Sore hands, wrists and forearms
Of course, the other thing to consider is this: when you've got sore, tired legs that are feeling like they don't want to roll over in your swag, let alone pedal another lap of Sparrow Hill, a good rub will breathe that little bit of life into them... just enough to get you by!
